Our project on Broome Avenue in Courtice was to create a road extension within a 1-acre lot joining Broome Avenue and Duval Street including a cul-de-sac. Our work encompassed the majority of the site preparation for these new homes including:
- Environmental controls
- Tree removal
- Topsoil stripping
- Sanitary and storm sewer installation
- Waterman and fire hydrants
- Water and Sewer services for lots
- Site grading
- Road construction
- Curb and asphalt paving
With a smaller site area to work within came a handful of challenges. Thankfully our highly skilled operators were able to work around the tight quarters with the large machines this project required. And with poor access, given the homes located on either side of the site, our sewer crew implemented trench boxes to give themselves safe working access for sewer and water connections. With this area having high-water tables it required constant dewatering. Sub-excavation and clear stone bedding was required to accommodate the saturated soil conditions.
As this is a residential area where families already reside, versus many of our earthworks projects in new developments, our team tried to work as quietly as possible to not disturb the residents. As well as being extra cognizant of extra safety concerns as children live and play nearby.
For our Sewer Crew this was a full circle job since they were able to see the entirety of the project from start to finish. So often our crews only get to see a single piece of the puzzle and never experience seeing the result of the finished product before moving on to the next site. On paving day it was important to Ross to have the same crew see the finished product with it’s shiny new asphalt be able to say “we did that”. Richard’s Sewer Crew did a fantastic job completing this job despite the challenges and with help from both Bill and Ross on preparing the road for Coco Paving to come in and add the finishing touches for us.
